The Formula

Katy Perry - Wide Awake

Katy Perry – Wide Awake (Photo credit: AlexKormisPS (ALM))

The majority of romantic/comedy films or TV shows follow a formula, boy meets girls, boy and girl flirt (if you are a TV show for several seasons), boy gets girl, then either boy loses girl, or show implodes because the success of the TV show was based on the will they or won’t they chemistry (Moonlighting, Bones), in all cases the boy for better or worst gets the girl back.

But the formula is changing, 5 years ago if we were still following the old formula we would be in the boy loses girl act of the show/film. This section often shows the passage of time thru montages, her’s filled with rain and said music Rhianna’s “Stay”, would work nicely here.  Shots of the girl, unable to concentrate at work staring blankly at a computer, going thru the daily motions of life like a zombie, disconnected. Not even her dog can comfort her since they they are both broken hearted.

His montage, shows him driving to business appointments, while Bruno MarsWhen I was your Man” plays in the background,

Hmmm too young, too dumb to realize
That I should have bought you flowers and held your hand
Should have gave you all my hours when I had the chance
Take you to every party cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing, but she’s dancing with another man.

My pride, my ego, my needs and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes

Maybe he listens and realizes what he has lost or he quickly changes the the radio to some banal talk radio that doesn’t make him think.

In the tradition of the new romantic comedy formula, our girl, is writing her own third act montage set to Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake“,

Yeah, I was in the dark
I was falling hard
With an open heart
I’m wide awake
How did I read the stars so wrong?
I’m wide awake
And now it’s clear to me
That everything you see
Ain’t always what it seems
I’m wide awake
Yeah, I was dreaming for so long

I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn’t dive in
Wouldn’t bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
‘Til I woke up on
On the concrete

In 2013 we don’t wait for the boy to get the girl back. We move forward and create a new act one in a new movie or TV show. While we are in preproduction on our new show, lets re-watch some of TV’s best comedies.

Ray Donovan – Boston Accents Required

1 Jul

Ray Donovan premiered Sunday June 30th on Showtime to 1.25 million viewers, the highest premier in Showtime history. And whyRay_Donovan_S1_Alt_Image_embed not, Showtime has combined the right elements, an impressive ensemble cast and a well established creative team, resulting in top shelf drama.

“Donovan” stars Liev Schreiber in the title role, his first series regular role, he is in almost every scene, we see him move effortlessly from family man, to cooler than cool fixer to brutal punisher wielding a baseball bat and finally to a broken man passing out drunk in his LA apartment. The show wants us to know what a complex character Ray is, there is no slow burn with this show, unlike  Mad Men or The Killing.
We got a lot in the pilot, dementia, sex abuse, suicide, revenge the list goes on, these set ups will either pan out and propel the story or fizzle as the show becomes overloaded and unable to keep up the goals it has set.

The show was created and is executive produced by Ann Biderman, (Southland), her partners in crime are Mark Gordon, executive producer (Criminal Minds) and Allen Coulter director (Boardwalk Empires, damages, The Sopranos).

The supporting players who round out Ray’s life are his wife Abby (Paula Malcomson) his children Bridget and Connor (Kerris Dorsey and Devon Bagby); his brothers Terry and Bunchy (Eddie Marsan, Dash Mihok) and his father recently released on parole and relocated from Boston, Mickey (Jon Voight).

His work life is no less crowded, he has two assistants Lena (Katherine Moening) Avi (Stephen Bauer), Ray’s main employer are two lawyers, Ezra (Elliot Gould) and Lee (Peter Jacobson). In the pilot we are introduced to several clients who are in need of Ray’s services, it is unclear if they will remain throughout the season or be replaced by others in need of Ray’s help.

One of the weaker moments of the pilot came when (spoiler alert), the dead hooker from one of Ray’s client’s world could be used to stop the outing of another client that was just caught with a tranny. It didn’t show that Ray was a master fixer, just good at turning dumb luck into a positive. The other demonstration of his fixing skills bordered on the ridiculous, having a stalker dye his body green to the brutal beating the same stalker with a baseball bat when he didn’t stay away from the actress as Ray had warned. I guess we will have to see if Ray’s fixing skills improve, or is he just a lucky thug.

Ray’s life is very complicated, his wife is unhappy and in true don’t cross a bitch fashion, lets the wolf in the gate when she allows Ray’s father in their house after Ray made it a point to tell her not to do it, that Mickey would ruin everything. Does she betray him because she believes Ray slept with an actress or because her daughter didn’t get into private school or because they live in Calabassas. The reason is irrelevant the writers needed her to betray Ray in the pilot to set up the dominoes for the rest of the season.

We are not told what happened between Ray and his father that caused Ray to set Mickey up and send him to prison, but it seems like everyone else is in on it, Ezra, the brothers, and Johnnathon Schaech’s character Sean. We aren’t given his backstory in the pilot, but he knows the truth so I can only assume he will reappear. Ezra (Gould) has dementia, I see mercy killing in his future, he may say the wrong thing to the wrong person, he is a liability and survival trumps loyalty. Will Ray do it or someone else?

Ray is also tasked with taking care of his family of origin, his brother Terry, a former boxer took too many blows to the head and has Parkinson’s, but manages to run a boxing gym, (happy) but lives in the back room (sad). His other brother Bunchy (Mihok) was molested by a priest, his is an addict spiraling out of control. Ray’s sister is dead, she jumped off a building while on drugs. At the top of the family tree sits Mickey (Voight), a downright despicable character, I needed a shower after watching scenes with him.

And finally, I must say something about those Boston accents, having grown up and gone to college in Boston, the accents are pretty bad. Its a hard dialect to nail, and everyone keeps fading in and out. You could argue that Ray, his family and brothers have been on the west coast for 10 years so their accents could fade. But Voight just got off the plane. I guess it’s too late to ask them to drop them all together.

I will be back next week, I want to see where this is headed. I predict any day now Showtime will announce a season 2 has been ordered.

Dexter is Back – Ray Donovan Premiers

1 Jul

Quick thoughts…

I watched the first 20 minutes of Dexter, then I switched over to The Killing. I will catch up with Dexter on my DVR later this week. The Killing really has my full attention this season, way to make a come back.

Need a Killing re-cap

Ray Donovan, love Liev Schreiber, its that voice, it makes me all safe and warm. Overall I thought it was a solid pilot, it set up multiple story lines, and a solid cast of characters. I think I could do without the molestation story line, but lets give it some time to develop. Obviously comparisons will be made to TV’s other “fixer”, Olivia Pope, but I must say I prefer Ray’s style to Liv’s.

Anne Biderman, creator/executive producer was the same on the now cancelled Southland, one of the most underrated shows on TV.  If you have time to kill and enjoy a really good cop drama catch Southland streaming on Amazon.

A full re-cap and analysis of Ray Donovan to come in the next day or so.

What did you think of Dexter and Ray? Are you watching The Killing?

Sharing is Caring

Mad Men just wrapped it’s 6th season, halfway thru I found two re-cap sites that are unique and creative in Mad-men-title-cardtheir approach to re-capping.

Tom and Lorenzo – This site provides two recaps for each episode, the first focuses on the episode, discussing the themes and the character interactions etc. Their second recap, usually up by Wednesday focuses on the costumes and the style. These recaps add another layer of insight into the show, digging deep into the color palette and the deliberate costume choices Janie Bryant makes each week.

Tom and Lorenzo were the first site to notice Megan Draper was wearing the same T-shirt worn by Sharon Tate a year before she was brutally murdered by the Manson family. This lead to weeks of speculation on Megan’s fate this season.

Believe me after you read the Mad Style recaps you will never look at a TV show and the costumes the same way again.

Tom and Lorenzo also cover Fashion, I recommend checking out all the sections of their site.

The recaps on Happy Place are done as if the entire show happened on Facebook. No description I provide can possible do them justice, you will just have to click on their name to see what I mean.

Comic-Con 2013: The X-Files To Mark 20th Anniversary With Panel — Who Has RSVP’d?

27 Jun

best tv couplesThe truth will soon again be out there — in San Diego, when The X-Files celebrates its 20th anniversary at Comic-Con.

RELATED |Comic-Con 2013 TV Panels & Screenings Schedule

TV Guide Magazine announced in the pages of its latest issue that it will be hosting the commemorative panel on Thursday, July 18. The dais will feature series creator Chris Carter and writer/producers David Amann, Vince Gilligan, Howard Gordon, Darin Morgan, Glen Morgan, John Shiban and Jim Wong.

As for the beloved series’ on-camera stars, the Official Gillian Anderson Website reports that the actress, who as of late has been seen on NBC’s Hannibal and BBC Two’s The Fall, will be in attendance — though TV Guide Magazine‘s published RSVP list mentions neither her nor leading man David Duchovny (currently the front man for Californication).

How long is the line for this one gonna be, folks?

What’s Coming in 2013

6 Dec

We have reached the mid-way point of the 2012-2013 TV season, as we slide into the holidays and say good-bye to 2012 lets take a peek at what’s on tap for 2013.

Downton Abbey season 3 Sunday at 9 on PBS – Season 3 has already aired on the BBC, if want to know what happens just Google.  Shirley MacLaine has joined the cast as Cora Crawley’s mother (Elizabeth McGovern). I guess Shirley and Maggie can try to out insult each other, my money is on Dame Maggie.  Matthew (Dan Stevens) and Mary (Michelle Dockery) are finally engaged, will they get married? Word on the street, Dan Steven’s is not returning for Season 4, will they pull a Becky Connor and slip us a new Matthew? The storyline I am most interested in is Bates (Brendan Coyle), will his lady-love Anna (Joanne Froggatt) be able to get him out of jail?  Somebody dies in childbirth this season. wonder who?downton abbey

Bunheads season 2 9pm Monday on ABC Family – I was and still am a devoted Gilmore Girls fan, I had such high hopes for Amy Sherman Palladino‘s new show. I watched all season, there where bright spots, and a lot of Gilmore alumni showing up (we really need Scott Patterson) but nothing could save the show because the lead, Sutton Foster is horrible. Sure, she is a Tony award-winning musical theatre legend, but stage actors don’t always know how to pull it in for the small screen. Lets hope she got some coaching in the off-season. Yes I will be tuning in again, I want to see if it will rebound.

Girls season 2 9pm Sunday on HBO – I don’t why but I like this crazy crew of self-involved hipsters. Will success spoil Girls? Tune into season 2 and find out.

Enlightened season 2 9:30pm Sunday on HBO – It started slow, but with strong performances by Laura Dern and a tight ensemble this show hooked me. I can’t wait to see Amy stick it to the man this season. Revolution!!! And did I mention the addition of the dreamy Dermot Mulruney, mmmmmm hello salty goodness.

House of Lies season 2 10pm Sunday on Showtime – Don Cheadle and his band of merry consultants are back, with a hearty mix of outlandish plot twists and complicated characters Showtime has another winner on its hands.

And finally the 2 shows I am looking most forward to

SuitsSuits season 2 10pm Thursday on USA – Some of the best writing on TV, a tight ensemble and a wardrobe to die for this show has it all. Harvey (Gabriel Macht) and Mike (Patrick J. Adams) are back doing what they do best, wining cases with a healthy side dish of snark.

Smash season 2 10pm Monday on NBC – Ok this was the show I loved to criticize, it was such an easy target and I should feel bad for taking advantage, but I don’t.  It asked for it, with its ridiculous plots, and one-dimensional characters. If it wasn’t for the incredible talent that is Megan Hilty and the scene stealing womanizing creep Derek, played expertly by Jack Davenport, I wouldn’t have stuck with it.  They fired the shows creator, and cut the cast, which all sounded promising until I saw the sneak preview.  Too much Katharine McPhee, and even though I love her, Jennifer Hudson is just stunt casting. smash s2
