Monday September 17th What You Should Watch

17 Sep

Next to “Nashville” the new show I am most looking forward to is “Revolution”.  The wait is over the show premieres tonight at 10 on NBC. I actually got to watch the pilot on iTunes last week. It was ok, I wasn’t blown away, but intrigued enough to come back for episodes 2 and 3 before I decide to keep or delete off the DVR.

“Bones” season 8 premiers at 8pm on FOX, this show really should have called it quits after season 5, but it is a ratings champ for FOX so it keeps on keeping on. Perhaps it will rebound this year.  Interesting fun fact, David Boreanaz has been on TV with no breaks for the last 15 years and 3 series. That has to be some kind of record, he played Angel on “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” for three seasons, then “Angel” for 5 seasons, followed immediately by “Bones” for the last 7.  Bones producer Stephan Nathan just revealed that they are currently negotiating with Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel for 2 more seasons.

The series premiere of “The Mob Doctor” at 9pm on FOX.   I don’t think any of us believes that “The Mob Doctor” will last more than a few episodes. I am not even setting the DVR.

ABC is airing a 3 hour special, from 8 to 11pm of highlights from the 4 day Country Music Association Festival.  I wonder how many times the “Nashville” promos will run during this show.

CBS is repeats from 8 to 11, and The CW is running back to back new episodes of  The LA Complex at 8 and 9.

The Blind Auditions continue on The Voice on NBC at 8.

Happy Mother’s Day – TV Moms I Love

13 May

Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland) – Buffy The Vampire Slayer – She always saw the good in people and knew what mattered most, she fiercely protected Buffy even after she found out that Buffy could take care of herself. She did what every parent must do at one time or another in their childs life she took on the school principal. And as any fan of Buffy can tell you no matter how many times you watch the episode in which Joyce dies, “The Body” you cry every time, it’s like losing your mom.

Mrs. C (Marion Ross) Happy Days – Maybe it was because she was the only one who could put the Fonz in his place, or the fact that she was a TV mom in an era (1974-1984) when women were joining the workforce and a generation latchkey kids were born either way she is tops in my book.

Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) The Gilmore Girls – More of best friend than a mom, her junk food and coffee addiction did not get in that way of delivering some of the best advice to Rory along the way.  Not to mention for someone who never worked out never impacted her waistline.

Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr) Roseanne – Full of sarcasm and eye rolls Roseanne’s particular brand of motherhood turned a lot of people off, but I have yet to see a more realistic portrayal of a mother on TV to date.  And no one could argue she loved her kids and was devoted to her family.

Claire Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad) The Cosby Show – This is one smooth lady, she was always in control of her kids and her husband. And a successful lawyer to boot, get back with ya bad self Claire.

Carmella Soprano (Edie Falco) – The Sopranos – Between the fake nails and turning a blind eye to Tony’s latest fling Carmella kept Meadow and AJ in line and on track. I think that gets lost when people look back at her character, they forget those scenes and the balance it brought to the show.

Olivia Walton (Michael Learned) – The Walton – Another cool customer when it came to juggling a lot of stress, Momma Walton was one of the best. The woman was raising 7 children plus living with her in laws in rural West Virginia during the depression enough said. And dont’ forget she battled polio and he house burned down. But she always had enough food and love for everyone. She also had dignity and pride.

Buffy’s Birthdays and Me

7 Jan

My birthday is coming up this week. It got me thinking about

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series)

Image via Wikipedia

how birthdays are depicted on TV.  Longtime readers of this blog know I am a die-hard Buffy The Vampire Slayer fan, and if anyone had crappy birthdays it was Buffy.

Let’s review shall we

Season 2 – 2 part episode Surprise and Innocence, while the gang plans a surprise party for Buffy, Spike and Drusilla plan a surprise of their own. The are assembling a super powerful demon, called The Judge.  Buffy sleeps with Angel, this gives him a moment of pure happiness and causes him to lose his soul. He reverts back to being the soulless Angel, who murdered thousands and has no remorse.

In the end Buffy deals with a common affliction for women, you sleep with a guy and he becomes a jerk. But at least she gets to kick his ass before the end of the episode and use a rocket launcher to kill the Judge. Great way to work out the anger.

Season 3 Helpless – As Buffy’s 18th birthday approaches, she is looking forward to going to the Ice Show with her dad. She is also going through new slayer training with Giles. What she doesn’t know is, he is hypnotizing her and drugging her to make her weak. The council wants to test her tactical abilities by locking her in a house with a super strengthen crazy demon.

Her dad cancels, and not only does she have to save herself from the psycho but her mom as well. She finds out that Giles betrayed her with the drugs. So not only does her biological dad let her down on her birthday but so does her father figure.

Season 4 – A New Man – Ethan Ryane, turns Giles into a demon. The episode opens with the gang throwing Buffy a successful surprise party.  The party highlights how out of step Giles is with Buffy’s new life at college.  After Ethan turns Giles into a demon, he can’t speak English and must turn to Spike for help. Buffy and the gang think the demon(really Giles) did something to Giles. Buffy is about to kill him when she sees his eyes and realizes it is really Giles.  Killing your watcher would really kill future birthdays.

Season 5 – Blood Ties – As Buffy and the gang celebrate her 20th birthday, Dawn’s entire world crumbles around her after she learns that she is the Key. Confused and depressed, she runs away, and ends up running into Ben. However, when Dawn reveals that she is the Key, Ben freaks out and then morphs into Glory. Glory pumps Dawn for information, and Buffy and company arrive just in time, as Glory concludes that Dawn doesn’t know where the Key is. Willow and Tara teleport Glory elsewhere, and Buffy is able to convince Dawn that she is indeed a Summers. Another party ruined because she has to save the day.

Season 6 – Older and Far Away – Dawn inadvertently traps the gang in the house during Buffy’s birthday party, with help from Halfrek the vengeance demon. Dawn no longer feels alone, but puts the gang in real danger because a disappearing demon is released from his sword. As anxious as everyone is to leave the house once the curse is finally broken, Buffy panders to Dawn once again and stays with her.  Poor Buffy the curse of the little sister, Dawn was a great plot device used to create havoc a lot.

Season 7 –
Sources speculate that there is no birthday episode in season seven because, at Buffy’s last party, Spike says, “You ever think about not celebrating your birthday?” Must have sounded like a good idea….

All things considered, if I don’t have to kill anyone and no one tries to kill me then my birthday is a success.

Don’t forget cake, ice cream and presents.

What was your best/worst birthday? Head to the commenst

TV Relationships I Love and Hate

6 Nov

Watching Declan and Charlotte on Revenge, made me think of some of the other TV couples I have hated. Either their storyline was boring or the actors had no chemistry.  Here are my lists of relationships I love and hate.

I would love to hear about the relationships you love and hate the most.  Please head to the comments.

Love

Rosanne and Dan Conner – Rosanne – Rosanne and Dan gave each other so much crap, they called each other on everything, but you always knew they loved and respected each other. They loved each other so much Rosanne created an alternate reality when Dan died of a heart attack.

Clark and Lex – Smallville –  One of the greatest bro-mances of all time, there was so much chemistry between these two there are entire forums devoted to Clex fan fic.

Mulder and Scully – The X-files – Talk about love and respect and enough sexual tension to snap all the wires on every piano in the western hemisphere, these two had it and then some.

Buffy and Spike – Buffy The Vampire Slayer – This was Buffy’s adult relationship, it showed just how hard a relationship can be.  That is isn’t all flowers and hearts, you have to compromise, and you may not always like the person.  But they had fantastic sex, and who among us wouldn’t like our sex life to be intense enough to bring a house down.

Claire and Cliff Huxtable – The Cosby Show – Again respect is the key here, and Claire was right a lot, and Cliff aknowledged it.  These two showed what a healthy relationship could be if you worked at it.

Jack and Karen – Will and Grace – Love of fashion and snark, what a foundation for one of TV’s best non-sexual relationships.

Alaric and Damon –  The Vampire Diaries – Another bromance, these two may not have the chemistry of a Clex, these two together certainly light up my screen.

Brenda and Fritz – The Closer – Awww, they are so sweet. Fritz is the most patient loving man on the planet. He is fiercely protective of Brenda saving her from herself sometimes and he also gives her that cold bucket of water in the face when necessary.

Sam and Dean – Supernatural – The best brother relationship ever on TV. They have died for each, sold their souls for each other, and no matter how many times they go their separate ways they always find their way back blood is thicker than water.

Frank and Joyce – Hill Street Blues – Who can ever forget the end of the pilot when we cut to Frank and Joyce of bed, the Capt and the lawyer we saw interacting all episode without so much as a nodding glance to their personal relationship. Theirs was one f the sexiest on TV during the 80’s.

Hate

Declan and Charlotte – Revenge

Clark and Lois – Smallville

Ross and Rachel –  Friends

Buffy and Angel – Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Stefan and Elena – The Vampire Diaries

Rachel and Finn – Glee

House and Cuddy – House

Meredith and Derek – Grey’s Anatomy

Mike and Carol Brady – The Brady Bunch

Carrie and Mr. Big – Sex and The City

Trick or Treat – Dress up as your favorite TV Character

24 Oct

Halloween is upon us, so why not dress up as your favorite TV character.

The new season of TV is chock full of choices, Once Upon a Time, gives us the opportunity to do half and half costumes. One side of your body is The Evil Queen, the other side is The Mayor, one side Rumpelstiltskin, one side Mr.Gold.

2 Broke Girls, easy, all you need is a waitress costume, if you want to go as Max, you need red-lipstick and boots, if you want to go as Caroline, add a big chunky necklace and a thin gold belt. Make sure your voice is loud and whiny no matter which broke girl you go as.

How about a Pan Am stewardess, even though its cancelled, you could always go as a Playboy Bunny.

How about going as Charlie Harper, all you need is a body bag, cut out holes for arms and legs, write the word morgue in French down one side, rip up the exposed clothes, put blood all your face so it looks like you got hit by a train and you are good to go.

You can go as my personal favorite, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, you have many slayer looks to choose from, Buff was always fashion forward.  remember the stake and cross necklace are key.

Here is video to help you pick a look.

Fairy Tale Face Off

21 Oct

Cover of The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm

Once Upon a Time premieres this Sunday October 23rd on ABC at 8pm, Grimm premiers Friday October 28th at 9pm on NBC.

Grimm

David Giuntoli plays Portland homicide detective Nick Burckhardt. He is about to propose to his girlfriend, Juliette (who won’t make it thru the first season), he also happens to be a descendant of the “Grimm” a group of humans who can see mythological creatures like Hexenbiests and Blutbads.  Nick finds out about his ability along with the audience during the pilot, he is visited by his aunt, played by Kate Burton, who provides the back story, a magical key and a trailer full of stuff to use for research. Its like the Sunnydale library on wheels, very convenient for our hero.  The first fairy tale, is Little Red Riding Hood, its fun to watch Nick solve the crime and make friends with a reformed Blutbad (wolf). Of course he gets the bad guy, but a different sort of bad guy is revealed in the second to last scene.

Once Upon a Time (ABC)

Jennifer Morrison plays Emma Swan a bailbondsperson, who is visited by a small boy who claims to be the child she gave up ten tears ago. The boy convinces her to return him to his home in a town called Storybrooke. (get it story broke-n). She is told the town is populated with storybook characters, but they don’t know they are storybook characters. The show switches back and forth between the fairytale universe and present day, filing in the bits and pieces.  Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow White) was cursed by the Lana Parrilla‘s (Evil Queen), the curse ended her happily ever after with the prince and is the reason the characters are trapped in our world.  I will check this show out, I am curious to see how it is developed, we may just end up with some really fresh new inventive TV. (or not)

I subscribed to the Grimm Twitter feed and got an advanced screening of the pilot. It was good, not great, it laid a solid foundation for the season. With over 200 Grimm’s Fairy Tales to use for source material the show practically writes itself.  There is a plot twist at the end of the episode, that I should have seen coming a mile away.

The bit with the reformed Blutbad, was cute, just like on Buffy and Angel this show has a demon on the inside to guide our hero.

Are you going to watch either of these shows? Why or Why Not?

Buffy Reunion

17 Oct

Be still my beating heart, this week on Supernatural it is a mini-Buffy reunion featuring James Marsters (Spike) and Charisma Carpenter ( Cordelia Chase). Marsters plays an unfaithful husband to Carpenter’s witchy wife, when she starts to get a little magical payback, the Winchester boys take notice and hi-jinx ensue.  The previews make it look like this may be one of the lighter episodes of the season.

Check out the preview below.  Want more follow the link to TVLine.com after the preview

Living in a TV World

9 Oct

If you could live in a TV show which one would it be?

My blog is named TV Happy Place, because TV is my happy place,  nothing is more relaxing or enjoyable then sitting in front of my TV and having a great episode of my favorite show or good movie wash over me.  Allowing me to tune out my day and focus on the made up world of other people.

Worlds where everyone has a beautifully furnished apartment, an awesome car, the perfect wardrobe, Apple computers, perfect hair and make-up and friends.  It doesn’t matter if their salary supports any of this, that is irrelevant in TV land. If you want reality watch the Discovery Channel and stop throwing logic at my fantasy world.

Back to my question, which TV show would you live in and would you want to take over as a main character, a supporting character or a background player?

Over the years there have been many shows I would have happily traded this life for, interestingly enough as much as I love it, Buffy The Vampire Slayer was never one of those shows. Not sure why, not that Sunnydale, the Scooby Gang, Buffy, Spike and Angel weren’t awesome it wasn’t dreamy enough. I was happy watching from afar, too much angst.

If I got the chance today, I would have to pick Revenge (ABC Wednesday at 10pm). First of all, The Hampton’s and you know what they say, location. location, location.  Second, everyone is rich , they live in fabulous homes on the beach, they wear beautiful clothes, throw incredible parties and everyone is kissing their asses.  Granted there is this pesky revenge plot thing, where people’s lives are being destroyed, that definitely dampens the mood.   To avoid being a target I would either choose to be Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) or Nolan Ross (Gabriel Mann).

Why these two characters, Emily is doing all the revenge, so basically she is having all the fun, Nolan is free from her sights and his helping her, not to mention he is a computer genius and filthy rich.

Next I would have to pick Glee (Fox Tuesdays at 8pm), I am a sucker for a spontaneous musical number, I wouldn’t to take over an existing characters life, I would like to be a new member of the Glee club, and Puck’s new GF.

Lets hear from you in the comments, what TV show past or present would you like to live in, and what character would you be.
