Season Finales 2012

26 May

Now that  TV season 2012-2013 has been put to bed, let’s reflect on the season finales of some of our favorites.

Did they meet or exceed expectations, or fall flat.

The Vampire Diaries – I knew it was coming, I knew they would turn Elena. It was the road to the last 5 minutes that was so satisfying, the flashbacks with Elena’s parents and Aunt Jenna tieing her past and present together created lovely symmetry and storytelling. If that wasn’t big enough, Klaus has taken over Tyler’s body, which should make all the interactions between Caroline and Tyler creepy but really good next season. Before Elena became a vampire she picked Stefan, but I don’t think that is going to stick, and they killed Ric.  I am sure he will be back, nobody ever really dies on TVD.

The Good Wife – Kalinda’s ex is coming, and it looks like a lot of trouble is coming with him. Best scene Eli, Peter, Cary, Alicia and Will at the elevator. Not since the Impala on Supernatural has an inanimate object played such an important part in a TV show. Lockhart/Gardner might be bankrupt thanks to Patti Nyholm and Louis Canning, the always pitch perfect Martha Plimpton and Michael J. Fox. – Met Expectations

Revenge – Far exceeded expectations. Death, Pregnancy and Amanda’s mom back from the dead.

Smash – I really really wanted to like this show, I stuck with it all season and hoped it would pull it out for the finale. Boy was I wrong. Kat McPhee was horrible as Marilyn, they ruined the character of Ivy Lynn, and just when you thought it wasn’t possible, Derek became more of a slime ball. Julia’s pregnant, but somehow she and Tom manage to finish the big closing number minutes before curtain and Karen still learns the whole number by the end of the show. Not to mention she learned pretty much the whole show in a day, because that is totally believable. All I can hope is the new executive producer can fix this show, he already fired Ellis (TG) and Dev. I have doubts because the new EP is from Gossip Girl, but maybe, just maybe he can pull it off. – Fail

Scandal – Wow, they really knocked it out of the park with this episode. I can’t wait for this show to come back in the fall. Let me see if I have this straight, Quinn is some kind of fugitive, Cyrus had Amanda killed, the first lady is faking a pregnancy to save her husband’s career. Really can’t wait until for this one to come back. – Exceeded expectations

House – The guest appearances of Kutner (Kal Penn), Cut Throat Bitch/Amber, (Anne Dudek) and Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) were icing on the cake. House faking his death and riding off in the sunset with Wilson was double fudge cake so yummy and satisfying to this long time viewer. The House/Wilson bromance was always the heart of the show, David Shore acknowledged that and showed the fans respect by sending them off together.

Glee – It’s the graduation episode, it should be a big deal, these are characters we have watched for three years, characters we love. Obviously we love them more than Ryan Murphy and the writers, because this send off was lame and made the characters look stupid, it was insulting. The only bright spot, Rachel went to New York, please let her stay there and dont let the show follow her.  Kurt and Finn didn’t get into the colleges they applied to, and didn’t have a safety school?!!!  Finn enlists in the Army to pay tribute to his Dad, who was a Marine, makes sense right.  The graduation ceremony was completely unbelievable, most public schools have a huge graduating class and wouldn’t allow their glee to hi-jack it for a performance.  Basically a crap finale for a crap season.

Modern Family – The novella spoof was inspired, Jay (Ed O’Neill) dancing with Lily was hilarious and the perfect set up for the the big ending. Gloria is pregnant. – Exceeded Expectations

Bubble Watch – Is Your Show on The Bubble

24 Feb

As always thanks to Tv By The Numbers for providing the stats and analysis.

Bubble Watch is a guess on a shows future based on its performance in the key 18-49 demo.

I check the ratings for my favorite shows every week, I know most of my favorites are on the chopping block.  (sniff)

Network By Network her is what is on the Bubble (likely to get cancelled) unless all of the pilots fail miserably, these shows are getting cancelled. (maybe, we are only guessing)

The CW

Getting Cancelled

Hart of Dixie and Ringer : I am not surprised HOD is done, it started out promising, but it has crumbled into the biggest pile of crap.  Ringer on the other hand,  has turned into a tightly written noir piece, too bad it can’t find an audience.  I am going to miss Ioan Gruffod, (purr).

On The Bubble

Supernatural: Its time, the show lost its center when Kripke left, it never regained its former rock anthem glory.

The Secret Circle: The only thing that could save this show is Kevin Williamson’s overall deal with the network, minimum seasons maybe part of his contract unless they pick up one of his new pilots.

Nikita, Gossip Girl and 92010.

ABC

Body of Proof and The River – DOA or up a river without a paddle, pick your cliché

Private Practive is on the Bubble, I guess we will see how Shonda’s new pilot does.

Pretty much everything else, Revenge, Castle, Suburgatory etc are coming back,

CBS

A Gifted Man and Unforgettable – weren’t gifted, and were pretty much forgettable, they are cancelled

The Good Wife, CSI: NY, Rob and Rules of Engagement are on the Bubble. I think Good Wife and CSI will be back.

Everything else is safe for now, depends on how strong the pilots are, they may need to make a little more room. Could the original CSI hang it up, maybe CSI Miami is done for, or what about The Mentalist.

NBC

Pretty much everything they have on is in trouble, but Community, Smash, Are you There?, Chelsea and Harry’s Law are in the most.

Other shows hanging by a thread, Parenthood, 30 Rock and Up All Night.

Looks like Grimm is getting renewed as is Law and Order SVU.

FOX

It would be easier to tell you what is coming back, Glee, New Girl and Bones.

Alcatraz, Terra Nova, Napoleon Dynamite, Fringe and The Finder are likely to get cancelled.

Bubble Watch – Bubble doesn’t mean cancelled – Maybe?

13 Nov

TV by the Numbers has updated it’s Bubble list, they have added Bones, Ringer, and Rules of Engagement.

Keep in mind Bubble watch seeks to predict what will happen to a show by season’s end, based on its ongoing performance.  Last year they predicted Fringe would be cancelled and it wasn’t, there is always hope.

Bones is on the bubble because, “it is an older show with ok ratings”. It is also airing a shorter season due to Emily’s pregnancy, to make up for it they are airing the Bones spin off  The Finder.  I remember the episode last season when they introduced the characters and the concept for the finder and I was not impressed.

Ringer, “it might be easier to just put all the CW shows other than the Vampire diaries on the bubble”, an excellent suggestion, but as the article points out not very practical. I suppose the CW could cancel everything but TVD and start over.  I would get rid of 90210 and Gossip Girl, before Ringer.

Here is a snapshot of each category, a link to the full article can be found below.

Hart of Dixie – Pilot

27 Sep

I really liked Hart of Dixie,  it reminded me of Everwood and Gilmore Girls, it was sweet and charming. Rachel Bilson is so endearing as Zoe Hart, I can totally relate to where she is at this point in her life. She did everything that was expected and it wasn’t enough, she didn’t get the fellowship she worked so hard for because she was missing a key part of the job. Heart.

Ever feel like that, you think you have it all covered, the good thing is coming, and them wham, you don’t get it because of a detail. A detail that no one mentioned to tell you would trip you up in the end. Didn’t any of Zoe’s mentors or bosses think, they should coach her over the last four years.  Zoe is pissed and rightfully so, but, if they did tell her then we wouldn’t have a show.

I found it humorous that the boyfriend dumped her because she talked about work too much. Is that supposed to be ironic, because isn’t it usually the men who can only talk about work. She doesn’t seem that broken up about it. I like it, the whole moving on with out a man.

Because in TV land the cute female lead never has to worry. She has a whole room of writers to whip up the next set of options, in this case two, who say and do the right things.  I could never figure out why men can mimic all the stupid crap on TV, but none of the stuff they really should.

First impression, it reminded me of Doc Hollywood, the 1991 Michael J. Fox movie, similar story, big city doc, stuck in small southern town, fish out of water story. Thinks he is better than everyone, learns his lesson, everyone lives happily ever after.

Zoe learns her lesson by the end of the pilot, which is good, we dispensed with the obvious early and set up several key plot points for future episodes. Like, Lemon and the mayor, the triangle between Zoe, George (love Scott Porter) and Tom.

What really works is the cast they have assembled around Bilson, especially Tim Matheson and Nancy Travis, I don’t think Travis will be back since she is in the new Tim Allen show. It’s a shame I really liked her “motherly” interactions with Zoe, since Zoe’s mother is a wash.

Ok, the box wine, making out with the cute neighbor in his car scene was silly, it summed up her day perfectly. What woman hasn’t sucked back a few and made out with the wrong hot guy. Good way to reach your audience.

Jamie King is interesting to watch as Lemon, it would be easy to dismiss the performance as “stock”, but lets give Miss King more credit, her interactions in the scenes with Cress Williams, who plays the mayor clearly show there is going to be some depth to this southern belle.

I am looking forward to watching this every week, it has great potential, and a great cast to carry it off. This is a much-needed break from, murder, edge and mayhem.

The numbers for last night, Hart of Dixie 1.78 million viewers, higher than it’s Gossip Girl lead in, but it didn’t fare well with the all important 18-49 demo, it only got a 0.8 share.  It is up against 2 1/1 Men, which was number one again last night with 20 mill viewers, down from last week.

BTW if you believe Star Magazine, Ashton and Demi are getting divorced, supposedly a $290million divorce.

What did you think of Hart of Dixie, let me hear your thoughts in the comments. I would love a lively discussion right about now.
